Based on an AR principle, we used technology to superimpose on reality a digital version updated in this AR book. The digital dimension helped to generate more interest from a broader audience.

A Commemorative Book for Geneva Airport

First, let me share the background of this project. Geneva Airport was preparing for its 100th anniversary celebrations – a time for events, conferences and festivals.  This was thus the ideal opportunity to produce a small historic retrospective in the form of a beautiful book. Certainly, the cabinets full of pictures that had accumulated over the years helped make this possible.

As a marketing and communication employee, I had already dusted off some of these photos when I launched the Geneva Airport’s Instagram account. The archive images had, as we expected, delighted our audience and created a hunger to see more. It was clear that Genève Aéroport needed to go even further with this treasure of memories.

With its 100th anniversary, there was no better occasion to produce an historical photo book to recount the airport’s story.

To achieve our desired outcome, the digitalisation of the iconographic material and meticulous journalism was essential. Françoise Debons, one of the airports editors and the project leader, set to work to organise and select pictures and sew together a narrative of ten chapters.

A Digital Twist

Most importantly, Françoise Debons discovered videos of great historical value and interest. To not include this unique video materiel would have been a missed opportunity for the narrative. So, the question was therefore: how can we play video clips in this book? Going digital was the obvious answer!

Cindy Burwell, project manager of the Centenary celebrations invited me to discuss the matter and to find a solution.  And that is where I entered the story of our digitally enhanced book project, which I was thrilled to be a part of.

After investigating viable options, we opted for a solution based on the augmented reality process. The exploitation of this technique makes possible to superimpose on reality an updated digital version in real time. We were then able to bring 2D images to life through video by passing a mobile phone over the marked ones.

Awesome experience and outcome

The production of the ‘digital’ element required intense coordination from various different people. An excellent internal team combined with a good dose of expertise from our developer ATIPIK made the success of the project. All of them give to the Centenary book a fairly extra which makes the difference. To sum up, the digital upgrade gave to this product a unique and modern twist!  This created a broader interest in the book increasing sales and enjoyment of the book.
